Update and Follow Up: You are required to continue to practice and teach the tai chi for health program and to attend an update workshop every two years. Your certification will be valid for two years, at the end of the two years, you can attend an update workshop either physically or by correspondence (for people with exceptional circumstances only) to continue certification. All participants who attend the workshop will receive either an instructor/leader or attendance certificate.
Different program has different requirements for preparation, but they are similar to the Tai Chi for Arthritis program descript briefly below. It will take from 20 hours to 200 hours to prepare pending on your experience in tai chi and health education. For example an experienced tai chi practitioner would not need as much time to learn the program from the instructional DVD.
Preparation for the Tai Chi for Arthritis program
Study the instructional Tai Chi for Arthritis DVD and handbook (usually included in your registration fees), and learn how to do the Warm up and Cool down exercises and Basic Six movements. You should study the advanced movements as well to gain essential understanding of these movement, but to a less competency level than the Basic Six. Even if you are not interested to become a certified instructor, preparation is recommended as it will help you to gain more skill and knowledge from the workshop. Read the handbook to understand what is tai chi, what is arthritis and how does it work.
Dr Lam strongly recommend you purchase a copy of his book "Teaching Tai Chi Effectively" because it will greatly facilitate you becoming a safe and effectively teacher, and it will be a useful reference book for years.
If you are especially interested in medical knowledge of arthritis, "Overcoming Arthritis'" written by Dr Lam and Judith Horstman is a valuable resource for both you and your students.
